1. Why should schools participate in Action Schools! BC?

Action Schools! BC is designed to provide more opportunities for more children to make healthy choices more often. For more information visit the Children's Health Crisis.

2. How can our school become involved with Action Schools! BC?

3. What does it cost?

There is no cost for school registration. Schools are eligible to receive FREE physical activity Classroom Action Bins and Healthy Eating Action Packs filled with valuable equipment and teaching resources to increase physical activity and promote healthy eating in the classroom along with complimentary Action Schools! BC Classroom Action Workshops.

4. How long does it take to register with Action Schools! BC?

Registration is Step One of four steps to becoming an Action School. The timeline for following the steps to registering with Action Schools! BC is determined by each school. Action Schools! BC encourages schools to form Action Teams, who follow a simple step-by-step approach that minimizes the amount of time necessary to create a School Action Plan.

5. Can a single teacher become involved in Action Schools! BC?

Action Schools! BC encourages schools to implement the framework as a whole school initiative. However, individual teachers may choose to implement the initiative within a school and will be supported by Action Schools! BC.

6. What if our school does not have a physical education specialist or nutritionist on staff?

Action Schools! BC is designed with generalist teachers in mind.  The initiative provides a best practices physical activity and healthy eating model, sample School Action Plans, a step-by-step approach and guidance from the Action Schools! BC Support Team. Schools are encouraged to create an Action Team and draw on the diversity of resources available within the school and community.

7. What if my school is already promoting healthy living?

Any current activities can be part of the development of a School Action Plan and incorporated within the Action Schools! BC framework for action. All schools are entitled to take advantage of the complimentary resources, equipment and support. The initiative also provides a planning tool and Action Ideas that can enhance current action to ensure everyone benefits.

8. How does Action Schools! BC complement the Physical Education and Health and Career Education Curriculum?

Action Schools! BC is curriculum linked and supplemental to the Ministry of Education recommended learning outcomes. Scheduled Physical Education is one of the Six Action Zones schools are asked to set goals within. The Action Schools! BC Planning Guide (pdf) offers a Physical Education Calendar, healthy eating ideas and recommended resources.

11. What if our school is already an Action School and wants to add the Healthy Eating Component?

You can register online for the Healthy Eating component or call the Action Schools! BC Support Team at 604.738.2468 or 1.800.565.7727. After completing the Action Schools! BC Inventory Forms and integrating healthy eating into the School Action Plan your school will be eligible for a complimentary Classroom Healthy Eating Workshop. Action Schools! BC will provide you with resources and tools to help you implement your school nutrition policy.
