Top Five Physical Activity Action Ideas!
- Provide professional development opportunities - energize staff while building their daily physical activity repertoire. Dedicate a full day to healthy living topics; allocate one hour focused on playground games; or teach a new classroom activity at each staff meeting.
- Maintain and improve the permanent play equipment and painted playground markings on tarmac surfaces to promote spontaneous physical activity.
- Place daily physical activity or healthy eating on the staff agenda and provide an opportunity to plan and coordinate, share experiences and resources, and take action.
- Include sport, physical activity or injury prevention demonstrations by teams, clubs or classes at monthly school assemblies (e.g. dances, martial arts, cultural games, skipping).
- Distribute and post the Action Schools! BC "In the Zone" and "In Season" information sheets to share healthy living tips with staff, students and family members. Download from www.actionschoolsbc.ca.
Top Five Healthy Eating Action Ideas!
- Develop and implement policies that :
- promote the consumption of healthy foods within the school;
- ensure access to healthy food and beverage choices for all students before, during and after school;
- provide pleasant eating environments and experiences. Discuss the possibility of restructuring the lunch hour to implement Play First Lunch.
- Replace low-nutrient foods and beverages sold in cafeterias, vending machines and tuck shops with nutritious foods.
- Use healthy foods or non-food items to fundraise (e.g. fresh fruit, plants, recipe calendars) instead of low-nutrient foods (e.g.donuts, chocolate bars, pop).
- Implement the Action Schools! BC healthy snacking activities for the whole school (e.g. Crunch & Sip™, Healthy T-Days, Re-Think Your Drink).
- Bring BC grown vegetables and fruit into your school. Apply for the BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program.
