Teacher Workshops

DESIGNED FOR K only, k to 3, grades 4 to 7, GRADES K TO 7 OR MIDDLE SCHOOL

Workshops for teachers are complimentary to BC schools. To book a workshop, please contact the Action Schools! BC Support Team at least 3 weeks prior to the intended workshop date.

Schools that book workshops receive corresponding complimentary Physical Activity Action Bins and Healthy Eating Action Packs of resources and equipment to support the integration of healthy living into the school day.

I. SIGNATURE WORKSHOPS

NEW - physical literacy in action! (2-3 hours)

This workshop focuses on the basics of physical activity and movement. Learn about and try fun and easy to implement physical activities that emphasize fundamental movement skills, such as running, jumping, catching and throwing. Activities include Chinese jump rope, dance, yoga, tai chi, and circuits and stations that can be implemented in the classroom, gymnasium, outdoors or alternate spaces. Physical Activity workshop (2-3 hours)

Learn about and try popular activities from the Action Schools! BC Physical Activity Action Resource that can be implemented in the classroom, gymnasium, outdoors or alternative spaces, including Bounce-at-the-Bell Jumps, sport-themed chair aerobics, Head-to-Toe stretches, playground circuits, and brain energizers.

Healthy Eating Workshop (2-3 hours)

This workshop will support teachers to feel confident in delivering lessons and activities from the Action Schools! BC Healthy Eating Action Resource in their classroom and school focusing on increasing vegetable and fruit consumption and reducing the intake of sugary drinks.

Physical Activity and Healthy Eating Combo (3-4 hours)

This workshop is specifically designed to support teachers in integrating creative physical activity and healthy eating activities into the classroom and school. Learn about and try popular activities that can be implemented in the classroom, gymnasium, outdoors or alternative spaces, including indoor workouts, dance, Head-to-Toe stretches, circuits and stations, and brain energizers. The Healthy Eating lessons will focus on increasing vegetable and fruit consumption and reducing the intake of sugary drinks.

5-2-1-0: Steps to Healthy Living (3 hours)

A cross-curricular collaboration workshop featuring Action Schools! BC Healthy Eating and Physical Activity, Sip Smart! BC, and Screen Smart resources that support school health promotion messaging (endorsed by Live 5-2-1-0) of the 4 steps to creating healthy habits:

  • 5 or more servings of vegetables and fruit;
  • 2 hours of screen time or less;
  • 1 hour or more of physical activity;
  • 0 sugary drinks per day

Kindergarten Daily Physical Activity (1.5-2 hours)

This workshop is designed to support kindergarten teachers in providing thirty minutes of creative daily physical activity into the school day. Learn about and try popular activities, including Bounce-at-the-Bell Jumps, BrainDance, scarf pathways, and fun indoor and outdoor circuits.

Kindergarten Healthy Living (2-3 hours)

This workshop is designed to support kindergarten teachers in providing thirty minutes of creative daily physical activity and integrating healthy eating into the classroom and school. Learn about and try popular activities, including Bounce-at-the-Bell Jumps, BrainDance, scarf pathways, and fun indoor and outdoor circuits. The Healthy Eating lessons will focus on increasing vegetable and fruit consumption and reducing the intake of sugary drinks.

II. Refreshers/customized Workshops

 

new - body percussion (1 hour)

Body percussion provides opportunities for creativity and leadership, improves body awareness, activates and focuses the mind, and combines music with physical literacy. Learn about techniques, rhythm blocks, and fun games that can be integrated throughout the school day as a brain break or transitional activity, or as a cross-curricular activity in math, music, Physical Education or Daily Physical Activity. Participants will leave with teaching strategies, recommended resources and the confidence to create their own sequences of movements. See Body Percussion Cards.

Building Your School’s Action Plan (30 minutes)

Looking for assistance creating your school’s annual Action Plan? An Action Schools! BC Regional Trainer can walk your school team through the process of completing a plan and assist in determining your school’s goals.

CHAIR AEROBICS AND WORKOUTS (1 HOUR)

Participants will learn how to combine chair aerobics and workouts (with themes such as paddling, swimming, and hiking) with other activities in the Action Schools! BC Physical Activity Action Resource to achieve 10 minute intervals of physical activity. Leave with the knowledge to create your own routines and integrate student leadership into your classroom or school activities.

Circuits and Stations - indoor and outdoor (1.5 hours)

This session shares indoor and outdoor circuit activities from the Action Schools! BC Physical Activity Action Resource. A variety of circuits will be highlighted integrating activities like skipping, dance, juggling, yoga, strength and conditioning, stretching, and sport-specific skills. Activities reinforce fundamental movement skill development and contribute to physical literacy. Participants will leave with several new circuit ideas and the know-how to create many more. Dance (1 hour)

Integrate dance into your classroom and expand your physical education repertoire. Learn about song structure, dance exploration activities, and teaching creative dance choreography with activities from the Action Schools! BC Physical Activity Action Resource. Participants will leave with teaching strategies and the confidence to create their own sequences of movements. See Deal-a-Dance Cards.

Eat Your Veggies and Fruit (1 hour)

Looking for ideas to incorporate healthy eating messages into your classroom and school? This session focuses on activities in the Action Schools! BC Healthy Eating Action Resource that highlight increasing vegetable and fruit consumption. Participants will learn easy to implement lessons and activities for their classroom and school.

new - enhancing learning and self-regulation through physical activity (1 hour)

Learn about and try physical activities that can contribute to brain function and development and assist students and teachers with self-regulation. Self-regulation can promote healthy living and social responsibility, and can encourage students to be mindful, alert, and ready to learn. Activities will include BrainDance, tai chi, juggling, outdoor circuits, and movement to music, and ideas will be offered for integrating them into certain times in the school day when energizing or calming activities can be beneficial. Complimentary teacher resources including the new DPA Pages! on Self-Regulation from Action Schools! new - Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in BC Schools Support (1-1.5 hours)

This workshop will support teachers, administrators and support staff involved in food procurement in understanding and using the revised 2013 Guidelines for Food & Beverage Sales in BC Schools. An Action Schools! BC Regional Trainer will provide assistance in navigating and applying the Guidelines, with a large focus on how to score freshly made and prepackaged food and beverages. Support organizations and resources to further assist with implementation will also be shared. Upon completion of this workshop and your school’s 2014-2015 Action Plan, you will qualify for the Action Schools! BC Healthy Eating School Food Grant.

Juggling (30 minutes)

Juggling develops agility, hand-eye coordination and the ability of the eyes to track and focus. Using bean bags, scarves or paper balls, participants will learn to provide a safe yet powerful brain break for their students. See DPA Pages! on Juggling - Hand and Foot.

Outdoor intercultural Games (1.5 hours)

Provide fun and collaborative leadership opportunities for students on and off school grounds. This session will focus on playground games in the Action Schools! BC Physical Activity Action Resource. The basic rules and fundamental skills of tag, four square, ball games, Chinese jump rope, sticks, and hoop-and-pole will be covered and participants will try the activities first-hand.  Learn new ideas to activate your school’s playground before and after school, and during class time, recess and lunch.

Sugary Drinks  (1 hour)

Looking for ideas to incorporate healthy eating messages into your classroom and school? This session focuses on activities in the Action Schools! BC Healthy Eating Action Resource that highlight sugary drinks and features Sip Smart! BC. Participants will learn easy to implement lessons and activities for their classroom and school.

Tai chi (30 MINUTES)

This session will focus on how to integrate tai chi into the classroom and school using routines and resources provided in the Action Schools! Physical Activity Action Resource. Tai chi develops body awareness, improves balance and calms the mind.

Yoga (1 hour)

This session will focus on how to further integrate yoga into the classroom and school using provided yoga resources. Yoga develops body awareness and improves flexibility, strength, balance and mental focus. Participants will learn techniques for classroom yoga such as visualization and storytelling.
